During the negotiating process, there may come a time when the offer you received simply is not enough to make you accept it, whether it is salary, benefits, location or any other reason. Candidates need to know clearly in their own minds what the minimum salary figure is for their acceptance of an offer and be prepared to thank the interviewer politely and head for the door if the offer tendered is not sufficient (keeping in mind the interviewer may raise the offer to get you to accept).

Good preparation and knowing your current status financially, professionally, and with other interviews/offers are key contributing factors in knowing when to exit the negotiating process, always being professional but firm in your convictions.

Many interpersonal skills are the same for both the interviewing and negotiating portions of the job search cycle. Maintaining good eye contact, smiling pleasantly, listening intently, answering questions honestly, asking for relevant information, and being professional are several important facets of the process. Be assertive but reasonable in your requests for improving the offer, knowing that the salary offered initially could be a low end of the range for that position, and gracefully inquire how that may be improved (or offset by a signing bonus, quicker review, or other incentive pay).

However tempting it may be to leap at the first meaningful offer, it pays to consider all the factors in making that decision. Nothing positive comes from accepting a position with a firm that you are unhappy in working for at low wages or benefits, poor conditions, or unacceptable hours/location. Finally, thank the interviewer for the time spent and the consideration the company has afforded you by tendering an offer.

As in the interview portion of the job search cycle, preparation is a key ingredient of the negotiation process. As the candidate progresses through the interview process, he/she should have determined what the salary average/median is for that position/title in the area of the country that the work will be performed. When the interviewer starts talking about money, the candidate already knows how much a fair salary should be in that area for that job. Knowledge breeds confidence and control, which are critical components of the negotiations.

As the discussions evolve into definitive talks about the offer, the candidate has to make certain that the company is making a firm offer, so get it in writing! Simply determine by asking, “Are you making me an offer?”; then request it in writing by email, mail or other means so you may review it with a spouse, a friend, your family or a consultant. Then ask when the interviewer would like to have an answer to the offer, thus giving you the candidate time to carefully evaluate it and compare it to others.

The candidate has now regained some control of the situation and needs to proceed with confidence as the offer is evaluated and discussed. Remember: both sides have what the other wants, you want the job and they want you, so proceed with the confidence that comes from being properly prepared. Be professional and cordial, and like the interview process, always smile and make it a pleasant conversation. Determine when and how the next exchange of information will take place, and email the interviewer a thank you note and confirmation.
